Spreading useful hydraulic knowledge and fountain design ideas throughout Europe was accomplished with the printed papers and illustrated publications of the time. An internationally celebrated leader in hydraulics in the later part of the 1500's was a French water fountain designer, whose name has been lost to history. His expertise in creating landscapes and grottoes with integrated and brilliant water fountains began in Italy and with mandates in Brussels, London and Germany. The text, “The Principles of Moving Forces,†penned towards the end of his life in France, became the definitive see this text on hydraulic mechanics and engineering. Replacing vital hydraulic breakthroughs of classical antiquity, the book also explains contemporary hydraulic technologies. Archimedes, the inventor of the water screw, had his work featured and these included a mechanized way to move water. Natural light warmed the liquid in a pair of concealed vessels adjacent to the decorative fountain were shown in an illustration. The end result: the water feature is triggered by the heated water expanding and ascending up the conduits. The book furthermore mentions garden ponds, water wheels, water feature concepts.
